Next up, our Meet the Team spotlight shines on our one and only, Senior Graphic Designer, Erin James. Ever wonder where our incredible visual job ads or the great graphics on our Instagram come from? She’s our girl! All things design aside, Erin has a unique set of skills and we can’t wait for you to read all about them:
Q: What’s your story?
A: I’m originally from a small town called Hubbards, just outside Halifax, Nova Scotia. After high school I got accepted to NSCAD University where I graduated with a Bachelor of Design (Honours). NSCAD gave me the opportunity to focus on design while pursuing other interests like jewelry design and book binding.
I’ve been with Envol’s parent company, Hot Soup Marketing Group, for quite a while – around 6 years! I started as a freelancer and when Hot Soup transitioned into a full agency in 2015, I knew I had to come along for the ride!
Q: What’s your favourite thing about working at Envol?
A: Definitely has to be the vast array of projects I get to sink my teeth into. I love a challenge – taking on projects that force me out of my comfort zone. Also the people. I’ve met (and feel privileged to have met) a great group of human beings during my time here!
Q: What makes you you?
A: When I was a kid, I was notorious for being afraid of dirt. My parents still tease me about it to this day. My mom would line towels from our door to the play area outside so my feet wouldn’t have to touch the ground! And when we went to the beach – which was easily my sister’s favourite activity – I would throw a fit unless I was covered from head to toe. I just didn’t want the sand to touch me, you know, because it was dirty. So needless to say this put a limit on how much time we could spend at the beach, which often ended in a stink-eye rampage from my sister.
P.S. This does not apply today – I’m not a weirdo… anymore.
Q: What do you do when you’re not creating graphic designs at work?
A: Hobbies – I just have too many! One of my personal goals is to learn a new skill every year. I aim to find new ways to take me away from staring into the depths of a computer screen, while still allowing me to be creative. Previously, I’ve taken to aromatherapy: making my own lotions and perfumes. I actually did a few quilting classes at my local sewing lounge. There’s this awesome group of women who come together each month to learn new skills and techniques!
This year? I’m learning calligraphy!
Q: What are you great at?
A: I’m able to bring a lot to the table through my experience and everything I’ve learned along the way! My strength lies in branding: my favourite projects to tackle! I love being able to create something out of nothing. Often, you can find me watching tutorials and reading to keep up to date with this industry. The field is constantly changing, so I should too!
Also, I’m the only one around here that organizes the tea cabinet in the kitchen – seriously what would you all do without me?
Q: Where’s your happy place?
A: Nature, nature, nature. Taking time to myself, disconnected from technology, and appreciating the world around me. I always feel recharged after a hike, soaking in a healthy dose of nature!
