DEI Blog Series: Creating an Equal Opportunity Employer (EEO) Statement

This is the second of 10 installations of Envol’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Series!

Our goal is to support organization leaders in taking real action to advance DEI within their teams, throughout their business, and in their communities.

Let’s talk about why Equal Opportunity Employer (EEO) statements matter, how to create one, and where you should use it!

What is an EEO statement?

Put simply, an EEO statement communicates your business’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

An EEO statement indicates to candidates from all backgrounds that your organization recognizes that systemic barriers often prevent the full participation of marginalized groups in employment processes.

This statement also serves to highlight that your organization is compliant with Human Rights and Employment standards.

What is NOT considered an EEO statement?

An EEO statement is not a standalone commitment; it requires employment policies to be in place to support diverse, equitable, and inclusive hiring practices, promotions, and more.

If your organization has not examined its hiring practices (for example, addressed interviewers’ unconscious bias), we suggest you start there before drafting an EEO statement.

How do I create an EEO?

There are many online resources you can consult for inspiration!

Here are our top five suggestions for creating a comprehensive, meaningful EEO statement:

  1. Ensure your EEO statement uses gender neutral, inclusive language.
  2. Articulate the employment processes that are relevant under your EEO statement (i.e., hiring, dismissals, promotions, discipline, etc.)
  3. Consider including specific protected grounds upon which an employee/candidate will never be discriminated against.
  4. State how your organization values diversity and how you are tangibly committed to equitable employment practices.
  5. Describe what inclusion means at your organization and why it matters.

Where should I use my EEO?

Make your EEO statement accessible on your career website, job advertisements, and in other locations prospective employees will encounter on their job search.

Consider including your EEO statement in your employee handbook, employee Intranet, or other internal resources where your organizational policies and commitments are displayed. You may also want to include your EEO statement on annual reports to stakeholders to demonstrate organizational commitment.
